Hopkins Leads The Charge As Greens Complete Celtic Double

Maesteg Celtic 24 Brynaman 41

The Greens travelled away for the second week in a row and came away with a second bonus point victory. The Greens started the brighter and with some good build up play were able to free up rampaging prop Dafydd Hopkins who bowled over two Celtic defenders and turned on the gas before sidestepping the full back to cross for his first try. Hopkins was soon back on the ball and after beating a few defenders was able to pop the ball to support player Lee Evans to cross the whitewash. Rhys Williams converted as Bryn led 12-0. Celtic responded with their first try at 12-5 before Hopkins powered over for his second try as the Greens increased their advantage to 19-5 after Williams landed another successful conversion. Some poor discipline by the Greens let Celtic in their second try just before the break which turned out to be the last score of the first period.

Half Time:  Maesteg Celtic 10  Brynaman 19

Shortly after the break Maesteg crossed for their third try and with the conversion secured the game looked evenly poised at 19-17. However normal service was soon resumed as the Greens secured the all-important try bonus point following a powerful greens scrum. With the homesters eight being driven backwards relentlessly Greens’ hooker Richard Davies seized the opportunity and crashed over from close range 24-17. Coach Gareth Davies then rung the changes and sent on prop James Thomas who impressed with some big carries and hits, Steffan Weaver- Davies, Sam  Lewis and Dafydd Moses. The fresh legs effect was immediate as Dan Page rampaged across the turf to touch down under the posts for Bryn’s fifth try at 29-17. Some good interplay between backs and forwards saw number eight Gethyn Bugler cross out wide for the sixth five pointer at 34-17 .Rhys Williams added his third conversion as the gap increased to 36-17. The Greens final try saw wing Dafydd Moses rolling back the years with a beautifully weighted chip behind the Maesteg defence. Then with a superb turn of pace that made light of the slippery underfoot conditions the Bryn flyer  outpaced the defence to complete a remarkable touchdown. The Greens conceded a late try in injury time when they were down to 13 men due to injuries but by then it was purely consolation.
