Greens Secure Bonus Boost As Promotion Push Continues

Nantymoel 13 Brynaman 45

The Greens’ promotion push gained further momentum last Saturday with a seven try bonus victory at Nantymoel Park. With Bryn starting off in determined fashion, scrum half Dafydd Jones darted over from close range for the Greens’ first try which he then duly converted for a 7-0 lead.  Bryn’s second try came from a spectacular driving lineout which began on the home 22 and ended in  prop forward Dafydd Hopkins claiming the touchdown in emphatic style. Scrum half Dafydd Jones added the extras as Bryn led 14-0 in as many minutes. A penalty for offside gave the homesters some respite at 14-3, before a typical rampaging run by prop Dafydd Hopkins resulted in Bryn’s third try on the half hour, when several would be defenders were given the Dulais Valley version of the Maori side step. Although Nantymoel reduced the deficit with a second penalty goal at 19-6, having played up the slope during the first period Bryn were on the whole well satisfied with their half time advantage. When industrious Greens’ flanker Joel Spurway crossed for Bryn’s bonus point try early in the second period, it was clear there would be no way back for the injury ravaged hosts. As ever Dafydd Jones converted, as Bryn’s lead increased to 24-6. Next up was a superb team try, where the Greens’ forwards and backs displayed some wonderful inter-passing skills to outflank the tiring Nantymoel defence. The end result allowed scrum half Dafydd Jones to canter home unopposed for try number five. With the conversion a formality Bryn led 31-6 on the hour. To their credit Nantymoel then lay siege to the Bryn 22 with a series of powerful scrummages. Eventually with the referee running out of patience a penalty try was awarded as the hosts clawed their way back to 31-13. Later with hosts reduced to 14 men following a yellow card, wing Tomos Powell showed some blistering pace to race home for Bryn’s sixth try at 36-13. This time Player/Coach Chris Moore added the extras for a lead of 38-13. With time running out Greens centre Steffan Pryce Griffiths added the coup de grace powering through some weary defenders for a well taken score. Chris Moore converted for a final victory margin of 45-13.
