Greens Escape to Victory!

In the first game of 2016 the Greens managed to blow away the post-Christmas cobwebs and still come out with the win. The game started with good Greens pressure which resulted in Daniel Page crossing for a well worked forwards try. Despite continued Green pressure it was Celtic who were to score next after a few uncharacteristic missed tackles in the Greens defence. Immediately after the restart, Celtic transgressed and Rhys Williams rifled over a long range penalty. The Greens pressurised the Celtic once again and from a resultant catch and drive man of the match Sion Slyman fed Lee Evans to crash over in the corner. Celtic's veteran 10 Luke Richards converted a penalty of his own to make the score 13-10 at the interval.

Half Time: Brynaman 13 Maesteg Celtic 10

The second half started with the greens in full control but couldn't turn pressure into points due to white line fever by a few forwards. The Greens’ scrum was by now rampaging forward at a rate of knots which  gave Rhys Williams the opportunity to kick a further two long range penalties. However instead of capitalising on the lead, the Greens went to sleep and let in Celtic to score a late try to make the score 19-18. Richards missed the conversion. From the kick off the Greens regained possession and surged deep into the Celtic 22. After a quick tap penalty move was  halted illegally Bryn  were awarded a penalty 5 meters out which Williams converted with the last kick of the game. Although a welcome win the Greens will need to execute far greater accuracy in their play if they are to continue the push for promotion and retain the West Wales Bowl. Hopefully this can begin next Saturday when the Greens entertain Taibach.
