Greens rack up 11 tries in comprehensive win

Brynaman  63  Glyncorrwg  7

Bryn racked up a season’s best 11 tries in this comprehensive win over struggling Glyncorrwg. Although the visitors had secured their first win of the season a week earlier over neighbours Pontycymmer, they would soon find that the Greens in this form were a far different proposition. From the first scrummage taken against the head by Bryn hooker Richard Davies, Glyncorrwg were immediately on the back foot and following some good approach play by prop Dafydd Hopkins centre Steffan Duggan raced clear for Bryn’s first try at 5-0. With brother Osian Duggan making his league debut in the second row the Greens were fielding three sets of brothers, as Craig Jones & Josh Ferriman accompanied Dewi & Sion Slyman in the starting lineup. With barely ten minutes played the Greens then crossed for their second try from a five yard scrummage. In a classic 8/9 movement No8 Clive Llewelyn linked with scrum half Lee Evans creating the overlap for right wing Owain Sullivan to squeeze home in the corner at 10-0. With the game already opening up an outrageous sidestep by flanker Sion Slyman bamboozled the rush defence and with a deft turn of pace he then darted home under the posts for an excellent individual score. Craig Jones converted as Bryn led 17-0. Outside half Jones was soon back on the scoreboard crossing for Bryn’s fourth try before converting again successfully as Bryn led 24-0. Another five metre scrummage, this time in the shadow of the Glyncorrwg posts, was the platform for Bryn’s next try. Once again wing Owain Sullivan was the beneficiary where following some slick passing by the Greens’ three quarters the young flyer outpaced the cover to round off a superb attack for his second try at 29-0. Centre Paul Taylor a continual threat all afternoon with his direct running created the next opportunity and following a neat offload to Trystan Lewis the Bryn flying machine scorched home for Bryn’s sixth try as the lead increased to 34-0. Another barn storming run by prop Dafydd Hopkins was the the catalyst for Bryn’s seventh try allowing full back Josh Ferriman to canter home under the sticks. Craig Jones converted as Bryn gained a half time lead of 41-0.

Half Time – Brynaman  41  Glyncorrwg  0

With the game effectively over as a contest and the bonus point already in the bag, Bryn started the second period with a little less urgency and were soon punished as Glyncorrwg pounced  for a well-deserved  try. An easy conversion followed as the visitors reduced the deficit to 43-7. A quick tap penalty by outside half Craig Jones ensured that normal service was soon resumed with prop Dafydd Hopkins showing a good turn of speed to crash over the whitewash on the wide right for try number eight at 46-7. In Bryn’s next attack full back Josh Ferriman looked certain to score but as he cut inside the visitors’ cover defence a reckless high tackle took him out illegally. From the resultant penalty Bryn opted for the five yard scrummage, and another huge effort by the Greens’ front five, impressive ‘on permit’ No 8 Nathan Ace dabbed down for a well-deserved score at 51-7. Minute’s later wing Owain Sullivan completed his hat trick; having been set up by another mesmerising run by Trystan Lewis in what was an inspired second half performance. With the score at 56-7 it was fitting that Lewis would have the last word and he duly obliged by rounding off another electrifying burst to cross unopposed for Bryn’s try number eleven. Outside half Craig Jones converted for an emphatic final score of 63-7.
