Greens Squeeze Home To Maintain Promotion Push

Greens Squeeze Home To Maintain Promotion Push

Cwmavon 26 Brynaman 33

21/4/18

Bryn’s promotion push remains firmly on track following another hard fought victory away at Cwmavon. With fellow challengers Builth Wells falling short at Maesteg Celtic the Greens’ destiny is now firmly in their own hands. However with four of their five remaining fixtures away from home the run-in is far from straightforward.  Yesterday’s fixture at Cwmavon played in sweltering heat is a case in point and shows that Bryn cannot afford to take any opposition lightly in this section be it promotion challengers or potential relegation candidates. In the end there was palpable relief that the homesters did not at least share the spoils, although the Greens will feel somewhat disappointed with the penalty count differential and yellow cards meted out to their detriment.

Bryn’s early 3-0 lead following a drop goal penalty by Dafydd Jones (in the absence of the kicking tee left in the dressing room), set off the Greens in text book fashion and when Coach Chris Moore sliced through the hosts’ stunned defence minutes later it looked ominous for the home support. Dafydd Jones added the extras as Bryn led 10-0 in as many minutes. From the restart a sweeping attack by the Greens looked to have set up another try scoring platform but in clearing out the decisive ruck Bryn were inexplicably penalised, giving the hosts the opportunity to clear their line. Having worked their way up into the Bryn 22, Cwmavon’s early scrummaging advantage soon paid dividends. With the referee losing patience after a series of collapsed set pieces a penalty try was awarded which reduced Bryn’s lead to 10-7. From the restart Greens’ flanker Jac Morgan enjoying an impressive debut, shrugged off several would be defenders before offloading to Craig Jones who raced deep into the Cwmavon half. With quick ruck ball delivered centre Steffan Pryce Griffiths manufactured a perfectly weighted cross kick which flanker Osian Evans gathered skilfully to dive over for Bryn’s second try and a half time lead of 15-7. When right wing Tomos Powell scorched outside the Cwmavon defence for a well taken score, Bryn looked comfortable at 20-7. However once again the hosts bounced back and following a converted try, the deficit was less than one score at 20-14. Despite being down to 14 men following their second yellow card, a superb pick and drive by Greens’ number eight Craig Kelly hauled Bryn right up to the homesters’ try line. Once again Bryn recycled at pace and with the home defence flat footed outside half Craig Jones ghosted through under the posts for a fine individual score.  With the try bonus now secured Dafydd Jones added the extras as Bryn forged ahead at 27-14. Yet again there was an immediate response from the hosts and despite some ferocious defending Cwmavon powered over from close range for a third try at 27-19. Two late penalties by Dafydd Jones and Chris Moore nudged Bryn further ahead at 33-19, before the hosts hit back with their own try bonus at 33-26 as the match reached a thrilling climax. With just minutes remaining the hosts then secured a lineout 15 yards out from the Bryn line and looked set fair for a catch and drive and potentially level the scores. However a superb lineout steal by the Greens defensive line was a defining moment and with ball kicked off the park Bryn had secured another memorable victory.
