Aberavon Green Stars 17 Brynaman 24
The greens travelled to Port Talbot for the third time this season and came away from a bruising encounter with another valuable four points. For the first 30 minutes the greens looked like they were still on the bus with their slow line-speed in defence allowing the bigger green stars pack to constantly cross the gain line. The usually dependable greens scrum creaked at times partly due to the overworked Lloyd Henry struggling with a calf strain. Henry was eventually forced to depart and was replaced by Dafydd Hopkins.
Assisted by the strong sea breeze, the stars got lucky early on when a speculative chip ahead was gathered by their full back who crossed in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Two penalties followed as the hosts increased their advantage to 11-0. The greens then had a penalty which skipper Bartholomew elected to kick for the corner. From the line out Joel Spurway scored a trademark catch and drive try in the corner. Outside half Rhys Williams converted as Bryn pulled back to 7-11.
However time and again the greens fell foul of the referees whistle, with the result that the Stars added another two long range penalties to make the score 17-7 at half time.
Half Time: Aberavon Green Stars 17 Brynaman 7
During the half time break the greens had the hair dryer treatment from coaches Davies and Jones. The desired effect was instant, as some outstanding carrying from Sam Lewis and Dafydd Hopkins brushed aside the stars defenders like skittles giving the greens massive go forward. From a resultant five metre line out, number eight Joel Spurway crashed over for his second try to the roar of the travelling support. Steffan Duggan slotted a superb touchline conversion as the Greens clawed their way back to 14-17. The greens now had the bit between their teeth and with Daniel Page in the thick of everything, the stars soon infringed once again. Up stepped Duggan to level the score at 17-17. Some good forward play and some interlinking by the backs then released left wing Owain Sullivan who set off on a fantastic fifty metre run and bowling over the stars full back to score the winning try. Duggan again converted for a lead of 24-17. Bryn pressed hard for the elusive bonus point try but right at the death they were stopped agonisingly short as the hosts somehow managed to stem the green tide. The Greens now have a week off this week before they entertain Maesteg Celtic (Home) on November the 7th.
