Greens Bounce Back With Bonus

Brynaman 30 Nantyffyllon 6

14/4/2018

After a three week layoff following the postponement of the Nantymoel fixture last Saturday, Bryn finally bounced back to victory with this patient display against a tough tackling Nantyffyllon outfit. With the visitors having seen their promotion challenge fall away over the last few weeks the Greens knew that a victory today was essential to sustain any promotion aspirations of their own. In the end although the score line was very flattering for the Greens Bryn fully deserved the spoils having weathered a significant early challenge by the visitors. Early on both sides showed elements of rustiness as both missed early penalty chances which were eminently kickable. In the end Nanty took the early advantage with a 3-0 penalty goal.  Bryn soon surged back and after a strong initial run by returning number eight Paul Rumming, scrum half Caron Jones set up the platform for flanker Joel Spurway to spin over under the posts for a trademark score. Outside half Craig Jones converted as  Bryn led 7-3. The feel good factor soon evaporated as from the kick off Bryn knocked on and conceded another penalty for offside. The visitors took full advantage slotting a neat kick which reduced the deficit to 7-6. Undaunted it was then Bryn’s turn to respond in kind and having pounded the visitors’ try line with numerous phases outside half Craig Jones spotted the opportunity to land a slick drop goal giving Bryn a half time lead of 10-6. Early in the second period a further penalty by Jones pushed Bryn further ahead at 13-6 before a raking cross kick ramped up the pressure on the visitors’ defence. Eventually Nanty conceded another penalty and up stepped replacement scrum half Dafydd Jones to coolly slotted the points with his first touch of the ball. With Bryn now ahead 16-6 heading into the last quarter they at last began to spread the ball wide. Their adventure was soon rewarded when some sizzling passing by Craig Jones and centre Steffan Duggan gave right wing Tomos Powell the opportunity to outpace his opposite number before off-loading a try scoring pass inside to fellow flyer Matthew Murphy who cantered over under the posts for an excellent score. Dafydd Jones converted as Bryn’s lead now stretched to 23-6. When Coach Chris Moore sliced through the tiring visitors defence  for Bryn’s third try minutes later at 28-6 an unlikely try-bonus for Bryn looked an unexpected possibility, but ultimately Dafydd Jones’ conversion at 30-6 proved to be the final act of this entertaining encounter.
