Cherries Downed in Maerdy Mudbath !

Coaches Jones and Davies rang the changes for this local derby return fixture. A new look Greens back line included Jonny Bevan and Tomos Powell in the centres and Dafydd Moses tempted out of retirement to take his place on the right wing. The game started in terrible conditions with a strong wind and heavy rain up the Maerdy.  Early on Jonny Bevan pounced on loose ball before making a 50 yard break, and when the Cherries infringed at ruck time the dependable Dafydd Jones slotted over the 3 points. Cwmgors responded with a penalty to even the scores to 3-3 at half time in what was an attritional battle of the two packs with not much ball spread past inside centre.

Half Time:  Cwmgors 3 Brynaman 3

The Greens upped the ante in the second half with the introduction of Sam Lewis to the fore with his trademark big hits. The Greens back row took the game to their counterparts at ruck time and on the gain line, which in turn gave the pack ascendancy to turn on their power game at scrum time. After another power packed scrummage number 8 Joel Spurway surprised the Cwmgors defence by breaking to the open side when it looked as though a blind side move would be a certainty. Before the Cherries could react his neat pass to Rhys Williams saw Bryn’s outside half glide through the gap just left of the uprights for a superb try. Williams added the conversion as Bryn gained control at 10-3. After some intense Cwmgors pressure that resulted in a shocking Steff chunk Rees cross field kick landing on the trotting track, the Greens were able to clear the lines sending Cwmgors back on a hasty retreat to a scrum on their 5m line. With the Cwmgors set piece visibly creaking under strain, the Greens pack steamrolled the Cherries eight giving the Greens the put in at next scrum. After another couple of energy sapping scrums the Cherries resistance rapidly faded away, allowing the Greens No 8 Joel Spurway to control the drive for a well-deserved push over try. The game ended 15-3 to the Greens which now makes it 4 from 4 against the Cherries. Great seeing 40+ young, old and ex Greens in the Clubhouse lounge after the game in Christmas jumpers having a good swig.
