Double Derby Delight for Greens

Saturday 7th  March 2015

Brynaman  21 Cwmgors  13

Bryn retained their local bragging rights with this deserved victory over next door neighbours Cwmgors. In front a bumper crowd the Greens turned up the heat from the very first scrummage where the front row union of Dewi Slyman, Alun Morgan and Steff Weaver –Davies immediately asserted their authority. With the early excitement building Bryn launched an offensive lineout drive from close range which was superbly marshalled by second row Chris Bartholomew. Then just as the visitors appeared to have stemmed the tide Bryn No8 Joel Spurway exploded away from the melee and powered over for a well taken try. Centre Steffan Duggan added the extras as Bryn led 7-0 with a quarter of an hour played. Former Bryn outside half Steffan Rees then replied for Cwmgors with a well struck penalty at 7-3 before Bryn bounced back almost immediately with another concerted attack. Once again it was a lineout drive which created real problems for the visitors and with the aid of some uncertain defending the Greens took full advantage as they muscled their way forward. Finally with the try line beckoning No 8 Joel Spurway seized the opportunity and dived over from close range for his second try. With Bryn leading 12-3 on the half hour everything appeared to be going to plan, but from a speculative clearance up field by the visitors Bryn inexplicably opted for a quickly taken lineout. This option soon backfired when the visitors regained possession allowing Cwmgors’ Richard Greig to canter home under the posts for an opportunist try. Steff Rees converted as the deficit was reduced to 12-10 at the break.

Half Time: Brynaman 12 Cwmgors 10

With the game finely balanced Bryn edged further ahead when the Cwmgors three quarters were penalised for straying offside in midfield. Greens’ outside half Craig Jones made no mistake landing his first penalty goal as Bryn led 15-10. Undaunted the visitors continued to be a tricky proposition and it took a try saving tackle by Greens wing Trystan Lewis to ensure that Bryn retained the lead as the tension mounted. As the last quarter approached considerable momentum was lost when the injuries toll suffered by the visitors resulted in numerous stoppages which eventually led to passive scrums. Nonetheless the ferocity of the tackling continued unabated and for Bryn there were once again outstanding efforts from second row Grant Milne, centre Kevin Jones and skipper Sion Slyman.  On permit flanker Lyndon Davies also weighed in with some huge collisions as the visitors were repelled back over the gain line time and time again. Eventually the visitors conceded another penalty for offside, and up stepped outside half Craig Jones to ease Bryn ahead at 18-10 much to the delight of the home support.  However the two score cushion lasted barely five minutes as another penalty by Rees clawed the visitors back to 18-13. From the restart Bryn finally sensed the urgency to surge forward with some real intent and renewed purpose, and after some expertly controlled phase play by the Greens pack Bryn outside half Craig Jones sealed the result with an expertly struck drop goal for a final score of 21-13.
